Five consecrated men gunned-down in their own home by a Naval death squad. The killers are known and they are free.  The only individual condemned is the journalist who first investigated the massacre.  Why should a democratic society tolerate such injustice?

Eduardo Kimel

La Masacre de San PatricioEduardo Kimel is the author of the book "THE MASSACRE AT ST. PATRICK'S," winner of the Premio Dialectica of Editorial Liberarte. Although he's Jewish and had never had any contact with the Catholic Church before, he devoted several years to investigate the crime and put his life at risk in the process.

In the last chapter of his book, Kimel expressed his opinion about Federal Judge Guillermo Rivarola's handling of the case, which earned him a lawsuit for libel.   Judge Rivarola asked for $25,000 to settle the suit. Kimel stuck to his journalistic principles and refused.  Rivarola managed to influence the judge appointed to the case -- Luisa Braidot, one of his former Law students -- and won the first instance.

Judge Braidot sentenced Kimel to pay $20,000 in damages and gave him one year in prison in suspense.  The verdict generated an enormous amount of media exposure in defense of Kimel's rights. He immediately appealed.   After two years of consideration, the Appellate Courts absolved Kimel on December 4, 1996 affirming the democratic principle which says that a Judge's decisions are subject to be scrutinized by the media.

The reversal of Kimel's case

The sentence in favor of Kimel was reversed by the Supreme Court in December of 1998.  The Court decided that there was enough merit in Judge Rivarola's suit to punish Kimel for his statements.  This decision was protested by ADEPA -- the Argentine journalists' union, and exposed in both "La Nacion" and "Clarin," the two largest newspapers.  The decision follows a recent trend in censorship against journalists who aim to unearth stories from the dictatorship's era.   Because many of the judges from that time still sit at the bench, the Supreme Court chooses to take care of their own rather than administer justice in favor of the grieving Argentine population.  Thus, the country's law officials (and the national government) prefer to bury the past at all cost.  If Kimel is condemned, he will be the only person ever punished for the massacre of the Pallottines -- a supreme injustice and historical irony.

Gabriel Seisdedos

El Honor de DiosThe second book about the massacre has been written by Gabriel Seisdedos.   Like Edwardo Kimel, he's Jewish and had never been in contact with Catholic priests before.  Although his investigation had a TV documentary as the main objective, it was complemented by a book that reflected his findings.

On July 5, 1996, Seisdedos' book "THE HONOR OF GOD" was presented at St. Patrick's Church to the media and a large audience.   The first edition sold-out in two months.
